Week 9: Podcasts, Video & Downloadable Audio

#20. Discover YouTube and a few sites
#21.
Podcasts
#22. eBooks and Audio eBooks
#23. Summarize your thoughts about this program.

I embedded a video from TeacherTube that I thought was funny. It wasn’t hard to do after I figured out how to copy the HTML and where to put it on my blog. I feel very techi being able to do this!

I added a podcast that I created using Audacity and uploaded to ourmedia. It took a long, long, time for me to figure out how to do this, I learned a lot in the process. On itunes I really liked the podcast “Grammar Girl” and the “National Geographic” video podcasts.

I enjoyed looking around the World eBook website but I had trouble trying to download an mp3 ebook to play on my ipod.
www.Podiobooks.com was an easy to use site that I was able to easily subscribe to an ongoing story through itunes.

This Web2.0 course has been awesome! I have learned so much by taking the time each week to explore the recommended sites. I was able to go at my own pace and spend more time in the areas that were new to me. I wish the course would be updated every so often with new sites and tasks so that I could keep learning! School is starting next week and I am excited to share with teachers many of the ideas that have come from this course. I love technology!

Week 8: Online Applications & Tools

#18. Take a look at some online productivity tools.

#19. Take a look at LibraryThing and catalog some of your favorite books.

Zoho Writer was easy to use and had more options than Googledocs. Zoho has the Online web applications creator that I played around with but it was a little complicated to me. I looked at the Zoho wiki creator, I still prefer wikispaces. Zoho looks like a great web-based writing application and I’m going to try using it in the future in place of Googledocs and see, which I prefer.
I went to LibraryThing and enjoyed cataloging some of my own books. I couldn’t believe how easy it was! When I read the directions for #19 my first thoughts were that I really didn’t want to catalog, I do it enough at work! I also enjoyed getting book recommendations based on the titles from my collection. I will definitely use LibraryThing again!

Week 7: Wikis

#16. Learn about wikis and discover some innovative ways that libraries are using them.
#17. Add an entry to the Learning 2.0 SandBox wiki.

I have been using wikis this past year and I am always looking for new ways to incorporate them in my collaborative lessons. The California 2.0 Curriculum Connections wiki was great it had so many ideas! I added my idea of creating a wiki about the history of your town. Students, parents, and community members can all be involved. Besides PB wiki I also use wikispaces for Teachers and really like it.
Week 6: Tagging, Folksonomies & Technorati

#13 Tagging and
Del.icio.us
#14. Explore
Technorati
#15. Read a few perspectives on
Web 2.0, Library 2.0 and the future of libraries

Help, I’ve started tagging and I can’t sop! I started using
Del.icio.us and I am finding it incredibly easy and useful. I am book marking and creating tags on pages I find helpful for a class I’m teaching. Going back I have found that hundreds of people have clicked on my bookmarks and have similar pages of information book marked. This is what web 2.0 is all about, collaboratively sharing information!
I registered a few of my blogs with Technorati and did some blog searches. I found that when searching I came up with a few inappropriate blogs. I would use this tool and then share the blogs with my teachers and students. I wouldn’t have my middle school students use it to search. I enjoyed reading the articles on Library 2.0 and plan to share a few of them at my next library meeting.

Week 5: Play Week

#10. Play around with with an online image generator.
#11. Explore any site from the Web 2.0 awards list, play with it and write a blog post about your findings.
#12. Roll your own search tool with Rollyo.

This week I enjoyed using
http://www.imagechef.com/ to fool around and change the text on images. I wish I had more time to play, it becomes addicting! I probably would not use this site with my middle school students; I think it might be asking for trouble. The web 2.0 awards list is amazing, I have never heard of many of the sites. I spent some time on Ning http://www.ning.com/ it’s a place that you can create your own social network. I’m still not exactly sure how it is different from My Space, I need to explore the site a bit more. It did have some library and web 2.0 sites/pages; I’m not sure what to call them? I created a Rollyo search for citation generators, it was pretty simple to do and embed into my blog.

Week 4

# 8 Read and learn about RSS feeds and set up your own bloglines account.
#9 Locate a few useful library related blogs.

This week I created a Google Reader account and subscribed to about 10 newsfeeds. I have the Google Reader on my personalized Google home page so that I can see what news comes in each day. I think I’m getting a little carried away adding so many news feeds; I’m going to try to be a bit more selective with subscriptions. It’s amazing how much great information is out there, I just wish I had more time to read everything! I am enjoying having news delivered to me instead of having to do so much searching myself. There are some amazing people out there that are constantly sharing new ideas, stories, and their thoughts about Web 2.0 and libraries. We are lucky to have those dedicated people willing to share their knowledge with the rest of us!
I can see newsfeeds being used with students that are reasearching certain topics or current events. I am going to explore this option with some high school students this next week and see how it works. I will post the outcomes... Hopefully everything won't be blocked!

Week 3

#5 Explore Flickr
#6 Explore Flickr mashups & 3rd party sites.
#7 Create a blog post about anything technology related that interests you this week.

This week I’ve spent a lot of time exploring Flickr and Flickr Toys. I have put some thought about how I might use these resources in the library. Flickr toys let’s you create magazine covers and movie posters. I created a magazine cover with students reading on the cover, they loved this. I used the movie poster creator and put book pictures and titles instead of movie titles. Flickr toys also has something that makes it really easy to create your own motivational posters. I used it and put a quote about reading and then added a picture from Read across America. As you can probably tell, I really enjoyed learning and playing with Flickr. I would love to hear what other library media teachers are doing with the program.

Week 2

#3 Set up your own blog.

#4 Register your blog.

Creating a blog on blogger was very simple. I have used blogger with my students only somewhat successfully. Not all of my students have an email account which makes it difficult to respond to posts. If anybody knows a way around this, please share!
I have used Wordpress a little, but I found blogger much easier. The other difficulty I have had trying to blog at school is that many sites are blocked.
There was an interesting article in Techlearning on blogging that really made me look at the way blogs are used in schools. I am including a link to the article.

Week 1

#1 Find out more about the program

# 2 Watch The Seven and ½ Habits tutorial

This first week has been exciting; I’m looking forward to all the new information I’m going to learn! Watching the tutorial, Seven and 1/2 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners made me realize how much some people, especially in education are constantly learning. In the tutorial it mentioned the beliefs of lifelong learners, one being that “Attitude is everything,” and the second “It’s never too late or too soon to learn something.” These two beliefs are the most powerful to me and what divides people who are life long learners and people that sit and watch the world go by.
